چکیده
The effect of different operational loading scenarios on predicted crack growth direction for a propagating inclined railhead is assessed by 2D finite element simulations. Studied load include moving Hertzian contact load, temperature drop, rail bending due to passing wheelset, and combinations thereof. the unbiased propagation using an accumulative vector tip displacement criterion. numerical model validated individual scenarios. Restraints face locking are imposed threshold parameter, whose influence also assessed. For thermal loads, path found diverge gradually from transverse growth, corresponding pure loading, shallow load. combined there discrete jump in as increased while kept constant. These results well aligned with empirical experience.

Crack Propagation Calculations for Optical Fibers under Static Bending and Tensile Loads Using Continuum Damage Mechanics
Static fatigue behavior is the main failure mode of optical fibers applied in sensors. In this paper, a computational framework based on continuum damage mechanics (CDM) is presented to calculate the crack propagation process and failure time of optical fibers subjected to static bending and tensile loads. For this purpose, the static fatigue crack propagation in the glass core of the optical f...
متن کاملNUMERICAL INVESTIGATION OF CRACK ORIENTATION IN THE FRETTING FATIGUE OF A FLAT ROUNDED CONTACT
The growth of slant cracks by fretting fatigue of a half plane in contact with a flat rounded pad was studied. The mode I and mode II stress intensity factors for cracks of various lengths and directions were calculated using the semi-analytical method of the distribution of dislocations, and their cumulative effect on the crack growth was investigated using the strain energy density criterion....
متن کاملClosure of a through Crack in a Plate under Bending
Abstract-A plate with a pre-existent through crack is considered under the action of a remote bending moment and a remote in-plane force. The problem statement is reduced to the solution of two coupled integral equations with strongly singular kernels. The independent variables in the latter equations are the closure displacement and rotation angle. The corresponding closure force and moment di...
متن کاملAnalysis of Surface Crack Growth under Rolling Contact Fatigue
Understanding the fatigue crack growth phenomenon in railheads requires a study of driving forces such as the crack tip opening and sliding displacements, under repeated rolling contact. Finite element simulations, allowing elastic-plastic deformation, and mixed-mode crack growth laws were utilized to demonstrate that the fatigue crack growth rates display a minimum after a finite amount of cra...
متن کاملPrediction of Crack Initiation Direction for Inclined Crack Under Biaxial Loading by Finite Element Method
This paper presents a simple method based on strain energy density criterion to study the crack initiation angle by finite element method under biaxial loading condition. The crack surface relative displacement method is used to eliminate the calculation of the stress intensity factors which are normally required. The analysis is performed using higher order four node quadrilateral element. The...
